Kelab Rekreasi Tentera Udara (KRTU), also known as Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Recreation Club is located within the perimeter of a RMAF Subang Air Base. KRTU was the country’s first all-Malaysian golf project. Malaysians were responsible for not only the planning, design and construction, but also continue to maintain and manage the golf club.
The aim of KRTU is to promote the morale and the well-being of TUDM personnel through the provision of continuing opportunities for development of a dynamic, spirited, healthy and progressive TUDM community. Consistent with this fundamental aim, the objectives of the Club shall be to promote opportunities for the growth and development of the family unit and the mental, social and physical health of the human person. KRTU also to manage and maintain a family-oriented recreational complex providing social amenities, sporting and recreational facilities. This objectives shall foster goodwill, understanding and good relations amongst all members of TUDM through engagement in social, sporting and recreational activities.
KRTU also to promote and encourage good relationships between TUDM and the general public through the offer of membership to other segments of society and the organization of sporting and other meetings, competitions, and matches, dinners, concerts, and other forms of entertainment alone or jointly with other association, club or person holding similar interests. It is to provide facilities for the purchase and use of equipment, accessories or other gear used in connection with activities organized or offered.
KRTU was the brainchild of formal RMAF Chief of Air force, Allahyarham Lt Jen (R) Tan Sri Mohamad bin Ngah Said. The Army Engineer Corps help clear the land in the mid-80s. The project took 123 acres of swampland and oil palm plantation and turned it into a 6,224-metre par-72 course that offers a wide variety of holes. The slopes and valleys of the original terrain have been largely retained, which means numerous elevated tees and a fair number of precarious fairway lies. Palm oil trees, in abundant numbers, also tighten these fairways and stand guard over the layout’s greens.
Once on the green yet another undulating, tiered surface, any two-putt experience to end your round will rank as an achievement and three putting here is as common as the sound of A400M and C130 aircraft taking off and landing on the nearby runways.
When it first opened for play and officially open on 30th January 1988, KRTU was barren tract with young trees and 18 one-of-a-kind greens. Twenty eight years later it still has the memorable putting surfaces and together with grown-up trees and a matured layout, the course is a winner.
It is not uncommon to hear golfers, who call the Kelab Rekreasi Tentera Udara, remark “If you can play well in KRTU, you can play well anywhere.”
